Spatial sound effects work when playing movies, TV, and videos in supported apps. Requires an iPhone or iPad.

Testing conducted by Apple in November 2020 using preproduction AirPods Max and software with iPhone 12 Pro Max devices and preview software. Testing includes playing one of the following until AirPods Max stops playing during a full AirPods Max power-down sequence: a music playlist with 358 different tracks (256-Kbps AAC code) purchased from the iTunes Store, a phone call over a mobile network, or a 2-hour, 23-minute movie purchased from the iTunes Store. 23-minute movie from the iTunes Store. Volume is set to 50%, Active Noise Cancellation is turned on, and Spatial Sound Effect is turned on and active only during movie playback. Battery life depends on device settings, environment, usage, and many other factors.
